- The biggest rainbowfish family, Melanotaenia, gets from the antiquated Greek melano (dark) and taenia (joined).
- Deciphered, it signifies "dark grouped", and is a reference to the regularly striking parallel dark groups that keep running along the assortments of those in the Melanotaenia variety.
